About Sunwing Airlines

Sunwing Airlines was a Canadian leisure carrier founded in 2005 and based in Toronto, known for its orange branding and close ties to Sunwing Vacations, one of Canada’s largest tour operators. WestJet acquired Sunwing in May 2023, and after a two-year integration process, Sunwing Airlines flew its final flight and was fully merged into WestJet’s single operating certificate on May 28, 2025, ending nearly 20 years of independent operation.

Sunwing Airlines Route Network

Sunwing’s former leisure routes to the Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America are now flown by WestJet, which absorbed Sunwing’s aircraft, routes, and the Sunwing Vacations tour brand as part of the completed merger.

Primary Hub

Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) — historical

Sunwing’s historical bases included Toronto Pearson (YYZ), Montréal–Trudeau, Calgary, Ottawa, and Vancouver — all now WestJet operations following the 2025 integration.

Alliance & Partner Airlines

As a merged-away airline, Sunwing has no current independent alliance ties. Its former flying is now part of WestJet, which is not itself a member of Star Alliance, oneworld, or SkyTeam.

Baggage, Seating & Onboard Amenities

A quick reference before you pack — always confirm exact allowances on your fare rules at booking, since they vary by route and cabin.

Carry-On & Personal Item

Not applicable under the Sunwing name — book through WestJet, whose current carry-on rules now apply to all former Sunwing routes.

Checked Baggage

Not applicable under the Sunwing name — WestJet’s current checked baggage rules now apply to all former Sunwing routes and Sunwing Vacations packages.

Excess Baggage Fees

Overweight, oversized, or extra bags typically incur a per-bag fee charged at check-in or online in advance — pre-paying online is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.

Seat Selection & Cabin Classes

Not applicable under the Sunwing name — WestJet’s standard cabin configuration (Premium, Economy, Extended Comfort, and UltraBasic) now applies across the unified fleet, including former Sunwing aircraft.

Sunwing's IATA code was WG, with ICAO code SWG.
WestJet acquired Sunwing in 2023 as part of a strategy to consolidate its position in the Canadian leisure and vacation-package market, and announced in June 2023 that it would eventually fold Sunwing into its mainline operations rather than keep it as a separate brand — a process completed in May 2025.
Yes — Sunwing Vacations, the tour operator brand, continues to operate as one of Canada's largest vacation package sellers, now booking travelers onto WestJet-operated flights instead of Sunwing Airlines aircraft.
Passengers now check in at WestJet counters instead of Sunwing's, and baggage policies changed — WestJet's standard model includes one personal item and one carry-on bag free, with checked baggage as a paid add-on, differing from Sunwing's previous policy of one free checked bag with paid carry-on.
No. Since Sunwing Airlines no longer operates as a separate airline, you can't book tickets directly with it. Search under WestJet for flights on its former routes, including through Sunwing Vacations packages.
Yes, WestJet also integrated Swoop (completed in 2024) and absorbed aircraft from the now-defunct Lynx Air, alongside the 2025 Sunwing integration, consolidating multiple brands under one Air Operator Certificate.
For a period after the merger, some aircraft still in Sunwing livery remained in service while repainting was completed, though this transition period is now largely finished.
Search for your route under WestJet, which now operates all of Sunwing's former Caribbean, Mexico, and Central America leisure destinations.
Not exactly — rather than a financial collapse, this was a planned corporate integration following WestJet's acquisition, with Sunwing's assets, routes, and staff absorbed into WestJet rather than liquidated.
